It has come to the attention of the Catholic Mission Office of the Parish of St. Michael Penampang that a petition is circulating in Penampang soliciting for donations / contributions. The petition is reproduced below for clarity:-
The Parish Office of St. Michael Penampang would like to inform the public that the above mentioned appeal is not associated with the Catholic Church of the Archdiocese of Kota Kinabalu and categorically state that it has nothing to do with the Archdiocese.
For information of parishioners, the Catholic Canon Law specifically states that:-
Can. 1265 §1.
Without prejudice to the right of religious mendicants, any private person, whether physical or juridic, is forbidden to beg for alms for any pious or ecclesiastical institute or purpose without the written permission of that person’s own ordinary and of the local ordinary.
The term “own ordinary” in this context means the Bishop of the Diocese of the person seeking the donation if he is not from the local Diocese and the “local ordinary” means the Bishop of the local Diocese.
Parishioners wishing to donate to the Catholic Church are therefore advised to determine and ensure that the petition for donation has been approved / endorsed by the Catholic Church before doing so.
